The Unclaimed Property Program includes uncashed checks, forgotten bank accounts, security deposits, tax refunds, credit balances, investment accounts, and other funds. Military medals and decorations that are found are kept in safekeeping and are forever held for their owner or heirs. When applicable, the program also provides information on file about the safe deposit box owner.
The Oregon’s Estates Administration Program protects assets and administers estates until the rightful heirs are located when individuals die without a will or known heirs. Administering an estate involves diverse tasks, such as coordinating funeral arrangements; identifying, securing, and selling assets; paying creditors and estate taxes; and looking for heirs. All remaining funds are deposited into the Common School Fund, where they earn interest for Oregon’s K-12 Education Programs until claimed.
