The housing choice voucher program, commonly known as Section 8, is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, older adults, and persons needing special features or accommodations to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private rental market. Voucher holders may choose their own housing in the private rental market, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments that meet minimum standards of health and safety. The Single Room Occupancy Unit (SRO) property offers housing for eligible single women. Priority is given to homeless single women, although single non-homeless women may also be served when there are adequate vacancies.
