A SAFE PLACE FOR NEWBORNS
Oregon's "A Safe Place for Newborns" law allows a birth parent (mother or father) to leave a newborn infant at an authorized facility. This law was created so that a distressed parent may give up a baby safely, legally, and confidentially. A "Safe Place" to take a baby is a hospital, doctor's office, birthing clinic, police station, sheriff's office or fire department. A birth parent must give the baby to a person who works at the facility.

Eligibility: As long as the baby is 60 days and older, is handed to someone working there, and shows no signs of abuse, criminal liability will be avoided.

INTAKE PROCEDURE: No identifying questions will be asked, however, it is helpful if the parent chooses to provide basic health information. The baby will be cared for and will get medical attention if needed. The Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare will have protective custody from the moment the infant is left at the facility.
